About iwi®:

Often witness statements are available and can be taken into account for analysis in the field of accident or criminology investigations.

situation1

The method has been developed during 2007 and 2009 with the focus on aircraft accident investigation. Especially in the case that no radar data and flight recorder data of the crashed aircraft are available, the method called iwi® has been developed to approximate the observed flight path based on eyewitness observations. The method was developed in cooperation with the German Federal Armed Forces Flight Safety Division with support by the German Air Force and Eurocopter.
The physiology and psychology of an eyewitness have been taken into account and given errors like the accuracy of an eyewitness describing an observed flightpath have been determined.

Witness information that is used for reconstruction

By using iwi
® witness reports are transferred into a 3D environment to calculate by using the lines of sight for situation reconstruction. This allows first of a visualization of the situation in 3D and a quicker verification of dependencies of given witness statements. Which witness says the truth, which witness is good / bad one !
The Virtual-Reality (VR) technology can be used and has been evaluated, if the quality of a witness interview can be increased and therefore the error reduced. The study using test witnesses has shown, that the error of the described flightpath could be reduced by using the VR technology during the witness interviews. The witness interview can take place within any office, providing more flexibility regarding time and weather conditions. The method is based on a verified function using the witness distance to the referenced and observed object.
iwi can approximate a flightpath or moving path with a minimum of two different positioned eyewitness statements. Finally the result can be visualized with the expected errors using the developed iwi
® application called: "ImmersiveWitness" for 3D visualization.
