The method iwi® was developed by Dr. Bauer in 2007 to approximate an observed flight path based on eyewitness observations.
Specificly for small aircraft and helicopter investigations, the situation can be, that no flight data is available, because the aircraft had no Flight Data Recorder installed. Mostly radar data was not available until the end of the flight due to terrain reflection in low altitude.
For accident investigation the flight path provides additional important information. iwi® can support the investigation by reconstructing the missing flight path information.
To apply iwi®, the witness reports are taken with the iwi® iPad application at the accident site. The information is then transferred into a 3D environment by an application (Immersive Witness Analyzer) to calculate and reconstruct the flight path based on lines of sight, including errors and witness accuracy statistics, based on former investigations.
iwi® provides the visualisation of the entire situation in 3D, showing witness statements and dependencies / overlaps between different witness statements. Finally all information can be exported to GoogleEarth.
The accident scenario can be also visualised in Virtual-Reality environment with "Immersive Witness Realism" to analyse and playback the accident situation for human factor analysis and lessons learned communication.
